In Roman society, there were two main social classes,  plebians, and Parthians. patricians were the noblemen and the rulers of the country while plebians were the workers and soldiers. The patricians had many more rights than the plebians, they could hold office and could own lands. plebians were not able to marry patricians.

The term plebian is still very much around today, in us service academy it is used to refer to the freshman class in a Deming matter. Even I have used it as an insult, jokingly of course.
