Western civ. blog #11!

Hello, reader, My name is lane miller, and today in western civ we talked about philosophers.

Socrates
Socrates was an early philosopher who taught classes to the public. He mainly talked about thinking about other explanations for natural events than the gods. This was very revolutionary for the time. He mainly taught the youth of Athens. This, however, would be his demise as people who disbelieved his teachings brought him to court for blasphemy and corruption of the youth. Instead of defending himself, Socrates instead said that he did do all of it and that he should be rewarded. He was sentenced to death by hemlock, a poison. He was even offered to be set free and escape, but to the plight of many, he drank the poison.

Plato
Plato was one of Socrates' brightest students.  When Socrates died he was devastated yes, but he wrote down all of Socrates' teachings and described his trial in a book called Apology. He also wrote down all of Socrates' teachings on justice and government in a book he titled Republic. this is possibly one of the most influential books on philosophy ever written, it also includes the allegory of the cave.
